1. Order description

The Academy for Conflict Transformation, the capacity building department of the Forum Civil Peace Service (forumZFD) is looking for a facilitator or a tandem of facilitators to conduct a 5-day presence course on Confronting Racism and Colonial Continuities in Peace and Conflict Work which will take place from August 8 – 12, 2022 in the venue „Arbeitnehmer-Zentrum Königswinter“ in Königswinter, Germany. The course will be conducted in English.

The facilitator(s) would be responsible for the conceptualization and implementation of the training, supported by and in agreement with the Academy’s team.


2. Course description

The 5-day presence training on Confronting Racism and Colonial Continuities in Peace and Conflict Work is offered to workers/practitioners of peace and conflict work coming from the global north and those from other fields who are committed and interested to learn and reflect more deeply about racism and colonial continuities in this field of work. There will be a maxi-mum 16 participants.

The objective of the course is for the participants to critically examine racism and colonial continuities in the structures, systems, and practices in the peace and conflict work; and identify/develop strategies and tools for inclusive, anti-racist and decolonized practices and interventions. Participants’ critical self-reflection and an openness to be challenged are aspects that are of relevance in the course.

By the end of 5 days, participants…
…have a deeper understanding of the dynamics of power and identity, and its role in peace and conflict practice and interventions;
…have become familiar with the concepts, terms, and language that perpetuate marginalization, among them: Racism, coloniality, and white privilege;
...have unpacked the structures, systems and practices that maintains racism and coloniality in this field, including topics on the racial (in)visibility in existing peace and conflict theories, and the role of aid;
…have identified some of the concepts, approaches, strategies and tools for anti-racist and decolonized practice;
…have developed a critical understanding of their own role as peace workers, and as well the role of their organizations in rethinking current racist practices, in shifting the balance of power, and in effectively supporting communities in building and achieving their vision peace.

3. Procedure and services of the customer and the principal

The work consists of the development of the course curriculum, including putting together materials and designing the tasks and deliverables for participants. Additionally, it consists of the preparation and facilitation of the 5 days presence sessions, feedback to participants’ deliverables and contributions, as well as following the group’s learning process. One week after the end of the course, the facilitator sends a report (1-2 pages) to the Academy.

The content shall be prepared in collaboration with the educational consultant of the Academy responsible for accompanying the course. Further, the Academy will provide logistical support and when applicable, give access to the online learning platform, which the facilitator could use for the creation of an online course structure and adding materials for the participants.

Profile
Desired competencies
The following criteria have to be fulfilled:

1) Substantial knowledge of the theories of the course subject (Racism and coloniality, peacebuilding, anti-racism, post-colonialism, and decolonization);
2) Substantial experience as a trainer and/or in adult education in intercultural contexts;
3) Relevant experience in or familiarity with the peace and conflict/peacebuilding interventions;
4) Strong communication skills, ability to deal with conflicts in a constructive way, ability to recognize and respond to participants’ needs, and willingness to implement constructive feedback;
5) Full English proficiency.

• A short CV with a focus on qualifications/ educational background and work experience related to the course topics;
• A short motivational statement explaining your work approach;
• A course concept including the following information:
· Course overview (short description of the course and relevance of the topic for the field of peacebuilding)
· Learning objectives
· Methodology
· Participants’ deliverables
· A general plan of the daily sessions. NOTE: Please take into account that lunch takes place at 12:30 and dinner at 18:00. There are also usually 2 coffee breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
