Shaping the Future of Peace Training in Europe and Beyond will be the leading forum in Europe to bring together leading training institutions, trainers and deployment agencies involved in peacebuilding and prevention missions and operations. Over 2-days more than 20 workshops, plenary sessions and special forums will address the frontiers, needs and current innovations in training for peacebuilding, peacekeeping and prevention, use of information and communication technologies, strengthening local and national capacities, gender and inclusion and much more. The Conference

Shaping the Future of Peace Training in Europe and Beyond will bring together leading centres of excellence and key stakeholders in peace training in Europe and internationally. The 2-day conference will feature more than 20 workshops, panels, lessons sharing events and innovation sessions on critical issues in training for peacebuilding and prevention from practitioners, training institutions and deployment agencies.The aim of Shaping the Future of Peace Training in Europe and Beyond international conference and forum for policy and practice is to bring forward the state of the art of the field of peace training across all sectors – government, military, police, civilian – to identify critical new frontiers, lessons learned, and innovations in technology and practice, and to contribute practically to improving the practice, delivery, quality and impact of peace training and capacity building in the field.

Key Goals & Objectives

Shaping the Future will provide a multi-stakeholder forum bringing together governments, deployment agencies and training institutions – including military, police, diplomatic and civilian (NGO and private sector) – to identify the state of the art of peace training in Europe and internationally in order to:

  • Learn from best practices and improve streamlining front of the field approaches across sectors;
  • Identify challenges and how they can be practically addressed: what corrections and improvements are needed;
  • Explore front of the field innovations in training methods, approaches and use of information and communication technologies to support and improve peace training;
  • Take steps towards improving competency frameworks and quality standards for peacebuilding and prevention training and improved collaboration amongst training institutions across sectors in Europe and beyond;
  • Explore training within a more comprehensive approach to capacity building across the field – with special focus on strengthening local and national ownership in the field

Who is it for?

Participants from across Europe and internationally are welcome, including leading training institutions, government ministries, trainers, deployment agencies, donor institutions, EEAS and key institutions, experts and practitioners involved in peacebuilding and prevention operations, training and capacity building.

Format

The Conference & Forum for Policy and Practice will be organised drawing upon best practice approaches to foster effective and collaborative engagement, sharing of lessons, and participatory approaches to identifying next steps and improving the field. The Conference will include Panel Sessions with leading experts, practitioners and agencies, parallel workshops, design forums and collaborative innovation sessions, a ‘market’ space for training institutions and agencies to present and share their work, an IT ‘space’ for exploring ICT technologies and peace training, and more.

The Conference is being organised in Vienna during Austria’s Presidency of the EU Council.

Workshops & Presentations

Over the course of 2 days there will be more than 20 workshops, presentations, panel discussions and collaborative development and design sessions at “Shaping the Future of Peace Training in Europe and Beyond”. In addition to the Plenaries and Workshops there will be an IT zone for e-approaches, gaming and ICT and Peace Training and a Fair for presentation of organisations and agencies. The list below provides an example of some of the workshops and sessions that will be organised. As workshop and session descriptions are finalised we will add brief descriptions of them here together with their time / schedule in the conference.

Submit a Proposal

Conference workshops, presentations and sessions may be organised by training institutions, inter-governmental organisations, deployment agencies, missions, trainers, practitioners and academics. We are particularly looking for sessions in the following fields:

  • Improving the Quality, Impact and Effectiveness of Training for Peacebuiding and Prevention
  • Innovations in Training Methods and Approaches
  • ICT Innovations, Gaming and E-approaches to training and capacity building
  • Training as an approach to Peacebuilding and Prevention
  • Lessons Learned and Results from EU, International and Partnership Projects
  • Strengthening Local and National Capacities: Training and Beyond
  • Ensuring Inclusion in Training: Gender, Identity, National Ownership
  • Comprehensive Approaches to Capacity Building for Peacebuilding and Prevention: Training and More
  • Meeting the needs of the field: experiences from practitioners, missions and deployment agencies – what standards does training need to meet to best serve the field

Additional items and topics outside these themes may also be proposed and will be reviewed by the Conference Secretariat.

Shaping the Future of Peace Training in Europe and Beyond is dedicated to being more than a ‘conference’. It is intended as a collaborative forum of practitioners and agencies in the field to foster improved practice and strengthen the field in Europe and internationally.

Submissions for sessions will be assessed according to:

  • Their potential value, relevance and impact for the field
  • Their contribution to improving the quality of peace training and capacity building and supporting innovations in practice
  • Their value to fostering improved collaboration and exchange and sharing of lessons and best practices
